 Mother’s Day Sermon 2008

Introduction:

a. From before the creation God designed a position for the populating of the planet and for the care of youth.

b. He entrusted this pivotal position to woman, to mothers.

c. Because of the obvious importance of the position we direct our attention to it.

Proverbs 1:8
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Proverbs 6:20,21
20
My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

21
Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

Proverbs 29:15
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame

I. MOTHER'S vocation
Luke 2:52 -God entrusted His Son to a mother:

52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

A. Impart wisdom

 II Timothy 1:5
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

 II Timothy 3:12-17

12
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

vocabulary, basic math skills, operation of household items. Child learns from mother how the world works.

b. Stature - See to care and feeding.

I Samuel 2:19
Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

c. Favor with God - See to spiritual needs. Knowledge of God and His law.

d. Favor with Man - Kindness, gentleness, truthfulness, courage, laws of men, customs, AND ETIQUETTE.

e. So lasting are the earliest lessons that when we think of the paths our lives have taken we cannot ignore these early lessons received from mother

II. MOTHER'S VALUE:

a. A God-designed and created position. Named by Adam,
Genesis 3:20 (without mothers the human race dies)

And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

b. Among our greatest examples of devotion and sacrifice

John 19:25
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

c. we have heard the cry of the toddler when mama can't be found. we have heard the cry of the aged when mother is, at last, gone. Much like the cry of the widows for Dorcas

 Acts 9:39
Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

d. She is example, friend and guide. Her great value is seen in how much she is missed when she is gone

e. Her persistence

Proverbs 31:10-31

10
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12
She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14
She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17
She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

31
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

III. MOTHER'S validation:

a. Few have enough money to pay mother for her time and attention. We often hear it said "You couldn't pay me to do that." Mother does it without pay. Who can pay for nights without sleep, moments of terror and the drudgery of one of diapers -

Luke 2:41-51

41
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44
But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45
And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46
And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

50
And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

b. Her reward comes in seeing her sons and daughters become men and women of God - Useful, kind, AND DECENT

 Proverbs 19:26
He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

Proverbs 23:22-25

23
Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

25
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

c. Her reward comes in moments of appreciation from her children and the recognition of her husband

 Proverbs 15:20
A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Proverbs 31:28
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her

d. Her reward comes from her God when she hears, "Well done."

Proverbs 20:20

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be
put out in obscure darkness

CONCLUSION:

a. As Christians we are to be thankful:

1. To God, the Father for providing for us.

2. To Christ for dying for us.

3. To mother for living for us.

4. Let God hear your prayers of thankfulness and mother your tender praises

A Mother's Prayer

I. Sarah and Isaac

Genesis 21:1-7

1
And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.

2
For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

3
And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

4
And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.

5
And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

6
And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.

7
And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.

a. Isaac was brought into the world with great expectations:

1. He was a type of Christ, that Seed which the holy God so long promised, and holy men so long expected.

2. He was born according to the promise, at the set time of which God had spoken

3. Isaac means "laughter," and there was good reason for the name

Genesis 17:17

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

Genesis 18:13,14

 13

And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

14

Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

b. After her prayer was answered her laughter was that of joy for the blessing received:

1. joy of blessings received

 Genesis 4:1

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

2. no one loves you like mama!

ii. the Canaanite woman and her daughter

 Matthew 15:21-28

21
Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

22
And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

23
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

24
But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

25
Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

26
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and cast it to dogs.

27
And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

28
Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

a. She asked for mercy because her daughter was grievously vexed with a devil.

b. The Lord first remained silent, but his disciples spoke up, desiring that the Lord send her from them.

c. the Lord pointed out his being sent to the lost sheep of Israel, his mission not yet complete, the gentiles would come into the church after its establishment

ROMANS 1:16

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

d. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

e. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and cast it to dogs.

f. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

g. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Conclusion:

A. CHILDREN NEED TO BE LOVED, THIS INCLUDES BRINGING THEM UP IN THE NURTURE AND ADMONITION OF THE LORD - EPHESIANS 6:4 - And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

B. PARENTS NEED TO BE HONORED BY THEIR CHILDREN

EPHESIANS 6:2

Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
